Thank you so much for agreeing to answer a few questions! Let the fun begin!
WHEN DID YOU START WRITING?
I started writing properly in 2014 – I enrolled on the Open University English Literature degree course. This included a creative writing module and that kick-started it all for me. I wrote Between You and Me the following year.
DESCRIBE YOUR LATEST NOVEL, THE PARTY, IN THREE WORDS:
Oh gosh, this is a hard one! Dark, secretive, and suspenseful!
HOW MUCH RESEARCH IS INVOLVED IN EACH OF YOUR BOOKS?
I do quite a bit of research, mostly reading case studies of incidents I plan to take place in my books that have occured in real life. I usually spend a good few weeks fully immersed in the research phase.
WHAT IS THE MOST INTERESTING (OR GRUESOME!) THING YOU HAVE EVER FOUND DURING RESEARCH FOR A BOOK?
The hardest research I’ve done so far was reading the book that tells the story of April Jones. It’s written by her father and is utterly heartbreaking.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR WRITING ROUTINE:
I try to stick to a strict 2000-word-a-day goal, but it doesn’t always happen like that! I like to do my research and plot my chapters out so by the time I sit down to write a first draft, I have a good idea of where things are going (until the characters decide otherwise!) I also spend quite a lot of time watching ridiculous videos on YouTube.
WHAT IS THE HARDEST THING ABOUT BEING AN AUTHOR?
The writing! Some days, it can feel like pulling teeth and I want nothing more than to curl up in bed with someone else’s book, but it’s a job, so I make myself sit and write at least a few words.
WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT BEING AN AUTHOR?
Again, the writing! Some days, the words just pour off the page and I can’t get them down quick enough. I also love when that little spark of inspiration strikes and you know you have a good idea for a story. Oh, and the books. I love receiving advance copies of other writers’ books. I’ve read some crackers lately.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU?
I’ve just finished the first draft of my fourth book and I’ve received my edits, so it’s time to sit down and start re-writing.
WHAT ARE YOU READING NOW?
I’m currently reading Buried Secrets by Lisa Cutts. I was recently sent an ARC of her next book, out in the autumn, and I loved it so much I bought her back catalogue!
WHICH BOOK SHOULD EVERYONE PUT IN THEIR SUITCASE TO ENJOY DURING THE HOLIDAYS?
If you like it dark and scary then definitely pack Hydra by Matt Wesolowski. If you fancy something lighter, then make sure you take The Plus One by Sophia Money-Coutts – it’s hilarious, and very saucy!
TELL US A SECRET!
The only secret I had was that I once accidentally told my neighbour her cat was dead … but then Tracy Fenton outed me on her blog and now I have no secrets left.
